Our trip to learn Dong Ho painting in Bac Ninh province was truly a wonderful and memorable experience in our life. Coming to the region famous for its traditional art of Vietnam, we had the opportunity to explore and participate in the process of creating unique Dong Ho paintings.
At first, we were impressed by the tranquility and beauty of Bac Ninh countryside, the origin of Dong Ho paintings. Coming to the region that has preserved the artistic values of our country for hundreds of years, we felt an even greater appreciation and admiration for the artists who have created and preserved this folk art. It was an honor for us to attend the painting class taught by the artist Nguyen Huu Qua. He is the successor of the meritorious artist Nguyen Huu Sam who is often referred to as the "treasure" of the Dong Ho Village.
While participating in the Dong Ho painting class, we learned how to select and prepare materials. Although, these materials are readily available in nature, undergo multiple processes to become durable and beautiful paper.
The colors of the paintings are carefully chosen from five primary, entirely natural colors: red from laterite soil, yellow from turmeric, black from bamboo leaf charcoal, green from Tram leaves, and white from seashell powder. This meticulousness and respect for each stroke on a Dong Ho painting deeply impressed me.
Beyond the technical aspects, what truly left an impression on me were the stories about the origin of Dong Ho paintings and their significance in the lives and spirits of the local people. This gave me a deeper insight into the value of traditional art and culture in people's lives.
My trip to learn Dong Ho painting in Bac Ninh opened a new window into Vietnamese art and culture for me. It was an exciting and enriching experience, and I will always cherish the precious memories from this journey.
